A beautiful island just a short ferry ride away from Hong Kong Island, Lamma Island makes a lovely day trip to escape the busy city. We took the ferry from Aberdeen to Yung Shue Wan village, from where we walked to the other main village on the island, Sok Kwu Wan, to catch a ferry back.

Although it is often claimed that Lamma Island is a peaceful, quiet haven of tranquility, sadly the island has become more and more popular with both tourists and locals – so around the main villages in particular it is very crowded. Combined with the heat and lack of shade on the path, this made for a rather exhausting start to our hike. The development of small restaurants along the trail only made matters worse with hassling. It took a good hours walk to escape all the chaos and finally get some peace and quiet…

That all being said, once you escape from the crowds you can really appreciate why the island is so popular – it’s landscape and beaches are simply beautiful.
