As part as my internship at Shanghai Jiaotong University, today I went with my lab to visit an international company called Agilent Technologies. They produce a wide range of analytical instruments and software, and the lab we visited particularly specialised in protein analytics.
They have some super cool equipment, apparently one of the best research labs in China! We were invited to have a tour of the facilities with demonstrations of all the main instruments. There were also several talks about the history of R&D in the company and the theory behind several pieces of kit. Most of our lab group went along for the trip, and so as well as learning about new technologies it was also a great opportunity to get to know each other and socialise.
Since much of the visit was conducted in Chinese, it was a pretty exciting challenge to try and understand all the new technical vocabulary. Luckily most of the equipment I had used or studied before at university, so I wasn’t completely lost! While my year studying in Harbin has equipped me with the basic language skills needed for everyday conversations and basic studies, my internship experiences are reminding me that my technical vocabulary is definitely somewhat lacking… Hopefully sometime in the future I will be able to work on this.
