Having just completed a year abroad in China, I was keen to make more Chinese friends and practice my Chinese by going to some related societies. The university’s Chinese Orchestra seemed like a great way to do this – its very relaxed, non-audition and rehearses for a few hours each weekend. The rehearsal location, Robinson College, is also pretty convenient from Murray Edwards.

My first thought upon entering the college was that I’d never seem so many bricks in one place in my life – literally everything (walls, ceilings, paving, benches) was made from red bricks. It is so much of a feature of the College they’ve even named their cafe “the red brick cafe”!

The Orchestra rehearsal was good fun, we practiced a piece called 黄河 (yellow river) which is quite simple (some not so pleasant high notes though!) but sounds beautiful. I chatted to a few other students and hopefully should be able to make some good friends there 🙂
